Genetic Testing vs. Gene Expression Testing

Genetic testing covers tests that need to be evaluated only once; a genetic trait at the cellular DNA level is considered inalterable. Genetic testing can be DNA-based or biochemical. It is used to uncover genetic variations, mutations, traits and predispositions. Genetic testing can also be used to predict an individual’s response to a therapeutic or other treatment.

Gene expression tests look for mRNA which reflects actual activity of the gene. Gene expression is dynamic; it responds to intra- and extracellular environmental signals. Every nucleated cell of the body carries the same set of 30,000 genes; it’s the gene expression determines what the cell does and how it responds to its environment. In AlloMap testing, gene expression is measured by quantifying the gene-specific messenger RNA (mRNA) present in the sample using real-time PCR.
